End Times Prophecy Sermon: Part Two
Thanks.
Let’s open up our Bibles and turn to 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17.
It says:
“15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”
Let’s also go to 1 Corinthians 15:51-53
“51Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.”
These two verses speak of an amazing supernatural event. You’ve heard the word before and it’s been made an almost household term due to the recent success of the popular Left Behind series.
That word is the “Rapture.”
What is the Rapture? It is the supernatural removal of God’s children from the earth—all those who have a sincere trust in Jesus as their Savior—as a means for us to escape the coming wrath of God.
The word “Rapture” is not found in Scripture, however it is the term we use to describe this earth-changing event.
The word “Rapture” comes from phrase “caught up” as found in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. The words “caught up” are translated from the Greek word harpazo, which means to “pluck away” or to “take (by force).” The translation from harpazo to “rapture” involved two steps: first, harpazo became the Latin word raptus; then raptus became the English word “rapture.”
So in short, there will come a time when believers worldwide will be plucked off this planet to, as Paul said, be with the Lord forever.
What will happen when this great event occurs? Several things.
One, as outlined in Thessalonians, a loud trumpet will sound. You can be at work when it happens; you can be cooking at home. You can be in the midst of sleep. You can be in your car. You can be out with your friends. Wherever you are, a trumpet blast so loud will make you stop whatever it is you are doing. Then, elsewhere, those believers who have died prior to the Rapture will rise first. They will be called out of their graves and go before us. After that, those of us still alive will be snatched away by the Lord and we will meet Him in the clouds and, joining those who have died in the Lord, we will be with Jesus forever.
How long will all this take? How long from here on Earth till we reach the clouds? It’ll be instantaneous. 1 Corinthians 15 says it’ll take place in the twinkling of an eye. “Twinkling” is translated from the Greek word “rhipē,” which means “a jerk of the eye, by analogy, an instant.”
It will be a case of us being here one second and gone the next. Even quicker than that. Just like you’ve seen in the video, at some point (and probably soon), believers worldwide will simply vanish without a trace.
Chaos right after the event is inevitable.
Imagine the car wrecks as believers driving on the highway and roads are suddenly snatched from their vehicles and no one is left behind the wheel. Imagine those who will die on the operating table when some of the doctors and nurses suddenly vanish. Planes will fall from the sky as their pilots disappear, construction workers operating dangerous equipment will suddenly vanish from their posts.
Millions will be taken. Imagine what this will do to the economy? Businesses will shut down when a portion or all of their workers are gone. Homes will be unoccupied. Imagine the riots when chaos prevails everywhere. Imagine the stealing when store clerks and managers are no longer there to prevent shoplifters. The list goes on and on.
And it will happen.
But when?
When will this take place?
The answer is two:
One:
Anytime. As we saw last week and as Jesus repeatedly states in Scripture, “You don’t know the day or the hour when your Lord will come.” He can come next week, He could come next month. He could come today or even right now. That is why, as we saw last week, it is so important to be ready.
Who would you rather be? The person who is walking with the Lord and living for Him when He snatches believers away?
Or would your rather be the one who’s only living for Him part of the time?
Can you imagine what it would be like if the Lord came and you were out getting drunk? What would you say to Him when you suddenly found yourself in His presence.
Guys, what would it feel like to be eyeing a pretty girl and thinking all kinds of nasty thoughts about her or even watching things you know you shouldn’t, and you suddenly found yourself standing before Jesus?
We’ve all been caught red-handed by our parents at one point or another. We’ve all been in that place when we’re doing something we know we shouldn’t do and Mom or Dad walk in on us. You remember the shame, don’t you? The embarrassment? The fear?
And that was just for mere human parents. Imagine suddenly finding yourself face-to-face with God Almighty on that day.
Are you ready?
Secondly, there are four main views concerning when the Rapture will happen in relation to the final seven years of human history (which we’ll get into in a moment), commonly referred to as the tribulation.
They are:
Pre-tribulation Rapture:
This doctrine teaches that at some point prior to the final seven years of mankind, believers will be snatched away.
Mid-tribulation Rapture:
This doctrine teaches that halfway through the final seven years—so three and a half years in—is when the Rapture will take place.
Pre-wrath Rapture:
This doctrine teaches that believers will enter the final seven years of human history and at some point, most likely at the halfway mark or just past it, the Rapture will occur.
Post-tribulation Rapture:
This doctrine teaches that at the end of the seven years, just before Jesus’s physical return to the earth, the Rapture will occur.
Why are there four main views of this spectacular end times event? The answer is simple: the Bible doesn’t explicitly say when the Rapture will occur. It only promises that it will.
However, we do have a few clues to guide us, and one big one, which is what we’ll talk about here, informs us that a few of the above scenarios probably won’t come to pass.
When a person belongs to Jesus Christ, they are saved not only from Hell and eternal separation from God, but, if they are alive during the last days, they are also saved from God’s wrath. In 1 Thessalonians 5:4-11 we read, “4But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
The key verse there is verse 9. We are not appointed to wrath, which is what the final seven years of human history are about—God pouring out His wrath on those who refuse to repent and trust His Son for their salvation. The Bible also doesn’t say that, starting day one of the final seven years, is when God will start pouring out his wrath. It just says that He will.
The church could very well enter the final seven years of human history, but will be snatched away before God brings His judgment on mankind.
We will be changed in that instant, transformed—“the perishable putting on imperishability, the corrupt putting on the incorruptible”—so we can stand in the Lord’s presence without issue. A human being in the flesh cannot enter Heaven because you and I are corrupted through and through. Sin has poisoned us, changed us and made us filth. A human going into Heaven is like splashing muddy water into a white room. It just doesn’t work. We need to be changed and only those who have the blood of Jesus on their lives will be changed.
Are you ready or will you remain on Earth to witness and endure the wrath of Almighty God?
Daniel’s 70th Week
So, what is this final seven years I kept mentioning? Where do we get that from?
How do we know when those seven years have started? Is there a calendar? A clock?
The answer is, yes, there is a clock and its name is Israel.
God’s plan for the redemption of mankind began and will end with that country. The entire history of the human race revolves around the Jews.
Israel is everything. If you want to know where we are in the timeline of human history, look at Israel. Watch Israel. Pray for Israel. Bless Israel.
Israel is the clock, and that clock is ticking.
In Daniel 9: 24-27, Daniel received a visit from the angle Gabriel, who gave him the roadmap for the future history of the Jewish people.
We read:
24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy.
25 “Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”
The Hebrew word for “seven” is “shabua,” which means a “week of years.” In other words, “seven years.”
Breaking down the above passage, we discover that, from that time Daniel received this revelation to the time Messiah will be “cut off,” is 69 7-year periods or 483 years. Add that 483 years to when Daniel got the vision and we have the exact date Jesus the Messiah was crucified and “cut off.”
So what about the remaining 7 years? After all, it says there will be 70 7-year periods for the Jewish people, not 69. Obviously, and based on the end time context of the passage, we know that the final 7-year period for the Jewish people is sometime in the future, beginning when the Antichrist, the man of sin, confirms a convenant with many for a 7-year period. And it is at the end of this final 7-year period—commonly referred to as “Daniel’s 70th Week,” that Jesus will return to Earth to establish His Kingdom.
See, the thing is, the Jews were scattered after Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD by the Romans. After that time, there was no Jerusalem, no Israel, and the Jews were all over the world.
But in order for the 70th week to come to pass, the Jews needed to be a people again. After all, Daniel’s revelation was for the Jews.
So how could Daniel’s 70th week even start without them? What was needed? Well, Israel needed to be up and running again and Jerusalem needed to be back under their control.
And guess what? On May 14, 1948, Israel was reborn as a nation. And what was even more significant about their rebirth was that it happened in a single day, fulfilling the words of the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 66: 8:
8 Who has ever heard of such a thing?
Who has ever seen such things?
Can a country be born in a day
or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
than she gives birth to her children.
God’s prophecies are true.
The rebirth of Israel in 1948 was a huge sign unto the world that the countdown to the end of human history had begun. But as mentioned above, another element was needed: Jerusalem. And in 1967, in the Six-Day War, the Jews recaptured Jerusalem.
The Jews now had their land and their capital to dwell in.
Now listen, because this next bit’s very important:
When Jesus came the first time, the Jews, except for a few, didn’t recognize Him for who He was. In fact, Jesus had stern words for the Jewish leaders at the time for their failing to see He was the Messiah.
Matthew 16: 1-3 says:
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
2He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.”
Now, in Matthew 24, when Jesus gave His disciples the signs of His coming—which we’ll go into detail with next week—He finished by saying:
32“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. 34I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.”
When one reviews the whole of Scripture, you see that a “fig tree” represents the nation of Israel. In other words, what Jesus just told us in that verse was that the generation that sees the rebirth of Israel as a nation will also see all the end times prophecies fulfilled.
Friends, Israel was reborn 59 years ago and that generation is almost up.
A Biblical generation is either 40 years, 70 years, 100 years or, in one instance, 125 years.
40 years have come and gone and Jesus is not yet back, so we can rule out the 40-year generation.
Very, very few people live to 100 years old, so we can rule that out, and nobody lives to 125, so we can rule that out as well.
That leaves us with but one generation timeframe to look at: 70 years.
And we can bank on it because God will not add to His word by creating a “new generation” timeframe.
And since Israel was reborn 59 years ago, that leaves us with about 11 years or less for human history to come to an end and for Daniel’s 70th week to be fulfilled.
As you’ll see next week when we talk about the signs as specified by Jesus, Apostle Paul, John, Daniel and others, you’ll discover that the final 7 years of history is nearly upon us or may already be.
Israel is God’s clock. Read the paper, watch the news and pay careful attention to what is going on over there. The war, for example, is not an accident, especially the parties with which they are fighting. It is no accident, but we’ll talk about that next week in: Signs of the End.
